191st & Little Chicago rd. in November of 2024

So, you might be interested in helping to create public art?

Whether your art is seen in galleries or on refrigerator doors, you are at the right place.

Our current project is the roundabout at 191st and Little Chicago rd. in Noblesville. It was a kinetic art sculpture made of a dozen metal butterflies that was installed late last fall. Within a week a distracted driver damaged the sculpture with a minivan, and by the end of spring, storms had damaged even more of the butterflies. The butterflies were taken down earlier this summer so that they could be redesigned.

The goal was to create a roundabout sculpture that has some kinetic motion. Finding the balance between that motion and the ability to withstand an Indiana storm front has led to some trial-and-error testing.

I also wanted to create a sculpture that could be refreshed every few years and not become stagnant. In a few years have local artists paint new designs on the butterflies to give it a new look.

So, why not have local artists each paint a butterfly now. It would guarantee a diverse look to the sculpture, and allow many local artists to enter into public art.

What if local artists each painted one?

Imagine driving past a public art sculpture that you helped create… or could have.

The new butterflies (pictured below) have cutouts in the wings, giving them a more abstract style than the original realistic style (above). So, feel free to be a little looser with your interpretation. The bare metal butterflies will be in the roundabout during this process, for viewing and wind testing. And hopefully no minivan testing. After the winners are selected, the butterflies will all be taken down in mid to late winter for painting. They will return for the grand opening in the spring of 2026.

And then we all smile for the group photo.
